Protozoa - Bacteria - Nanoparticles

Our first community interaction study involves investigating how nanomaterial contamination alters interaction of organisms at the biofilm level. Recently published in Microbial Ecology, we show the inhibition of normal amoebae grazing on biofilms after biofilm exposure to nanomaterials. This work is ongoing to determine if the effect on amoebae grazing is conserved across other protozoa such as ciliates. In the image here - see how L. pneumophila biofilms are altered after exposure to gold nanoparticles. The same effect is seen after exposure to platinum and iron oxide particles.
